Grandma's birthday

On Sunday, Trond’s grandma celebrated her 88th birthday at the home she stays at. There was a large gathering of her children, grandchildren and friends for cake, sandwiches and coffee.

The way birthdays work here is that rather than one large cake, there are a few small ones. Which is great, coz you get to eat more! Unni made a blueberry meringue cake. With funky purple cream using the blueberries I picked hor! She made one the night before but it failed, so we ate it instead. It was YUMMYLICIOUS man! So she tried again the next morning, success this time. But by the time she brought it to the party in the evening, it had already collapsed a little apparently. It was her first time baking such a cake and she vowed it was gonna be the last. Argh, no more yummy cakeee againnnn…

Unlike Dagfinn’s 50th birthday with speeches and performances, this was just a little gathering of people, sitting around chatting. Unni took the chance to go round collecting signatures for the island’s petition against the local government’s decision to take away the street lights.

Unni and I were supposed to be there till 6.30. coz I had to get back to help Inge with the evening milking. But as expected, when Unni starts talking to others, time is not an important factor. I was getting kan jiong looking at the clock, and was even joking about maybe Inge might drive a tractor to the home to come get me.

We reach home at 7.15. Inge had already left for the cow house. I was secretly hoping that he’d be half-way through when I got there, so I could do less! But bubble burst when he said, ‘oh, you can go wash…’

Washing is the fist thing I do in the cow house.

Towards the end, the horror of all horrors. Inge tells me we are keeping the cows in for the night. My world comes crashing down on me. Means that I gotta bring in all the grass for the cows to eat during the night. Also means that the i-don’t-mind-sitting-in-my-poop-and-pee-cows would be dirty dirty dirty in the morning. And cleaning them is just such a chore. Coz it takes much longer. Not to mention, more effort.

Anyway, news has come in that the cows will be kept in every night from now on. Coz they’ve eaten up all the grass in the fields, and there is limited supply left, so we can only afford to keep them out in the day.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That lady sitting beside grandma (in the first picture) is 94 years old! She is still very alert and healthy. This party was just a small get together, when grandma turned 85, she also had a do like Dagfinn's , in the same hall, (but not as many speeches!).
